Techtrol Solution for Measuring Loss of Head in Water Management Systems

With man’s increasing need to consume water, need to measure water in open channels has also increased. Open channels are those natural and man-made structures through which water flows with a free surface. For open channels a number of different and varied methods have been developed to measure the flow of water. Modern mechanical and electronic flow meters have made the continuous measurement of open channel flows possible. 

Pune Techtrol offers solutions for measuring “Loss of Head”  (differential level) between upstream and downstream of the filter screen in open channels of WTP’s / ETP’s, filtration stations, water management systems, etc.

Techtrol’s ultrasonic loss of head level system – LHUS is widely used in water canals, water treatment plants, sewage pumping and filter stations. It consists of a pair of ultrasonic transmitters and a differential level controller. The transmitters are installed on either side of the filter screen to translate the level change into an analog signal by using time of flight principle. The relative difference between the two signals from upstream and downstream is processed by the evaluation unit and displayed as “Loss-of-Head” digitally.

System Operation

The system (Fig 1) consists of two Ultrasonic Transmitters (Ultratrol), which consist of ultrasonic transducer integral with microcontroller based electronics housed in an enclosure. Ultrasonic pulses emitted from the transducer to the target are reflected back and sensed by the electronics to provide 4-20mA current output. The two Ultrasonic Transmitters are mounted on the upstream and downstream side of the bar screen placed in an open channel. These transmitters are connected to Differential Level Controller (TDLC) with relay set at a predefined value. The level difference between upstream and downstream side is measured by the TDLC to actuate a preset relay.

TDLC can also be provided with 4-20mA (re- transmission) to DCS / PLC Screen Panel for further control and automation.

Pune Techtrol Transmitters installed at Transworld Furtichem

Pune Techtrol had recently been approached by Transworld Furtichem Pvt. Ltd. to provide level measurement solution for storage tanks of various chemicals including 33% HCl. Transworld Furtichem Pvt. Ltd. is the manufacturer and supplier of wide range of chemical and fertilizers. Pune Techtrol had this challenging assignment, as we had to offer them an optimum and durable solution for level measurement for 33% HCl which is reliable & cost effective.

The Hydrochloric Acid (HCl) acid is highly corrosive & toxic. Concentrated HCl releases dangerous fumes also called as acidic mists which can cause damage and cause irreparable harm to human skin, eyes, tissues or internal organs. Upon oxidizing of HCl, it produces toxic chlorine gas.

HCls handling requires extra precautions and care. The acid & its fumes corrode most of the engineering MOCs in a very short duration of time. This dangerous substance is generally used for steel pickling (removing rust or iron oxide scale from iron or steel before further processing), producing organic compounds, water treatment chemical, oil well acidizing, salt purification, household cleaner & leather processing. While handling it, one has to use protective gears like rubber gloves, boots, face shield, full suit, & vapour respirator. As such, handling & storing HCl acid presents many problems and difficulties.

Pune Techtrol provided ‘G-TROL’ transmitters and ‘IN-TROL’ transmitters which have successfully been used for continuous level measurements of 33% Hydrochloric Acid.

GTROL and INTROL are the transmitters based on radar principle, used for measurement of the level of liquids and solids. GTROL is a contact type of transmitter which consists of a probe connected to an enclosure containing signal converting electronics; whereas INTROL is a non-contact type of transmitter, unaffected by conductivity & density of the liquid, enabling level measurement up to 30 meters depth.

The tanks were of varying depths from small to large. Pune Techtrol provided them ‘G-TROL’, a contact type transmitter, fitted with PTFE coated suspended probe for small tanks having a depth of 2mtrs. However, for large tanks having the depth of 10 meters, the cost of ‘G-TROL’ was becoming prohibitive, as we had to provide them with a very long sensor in PTFE.

Alternatively, Pune Techtrol installed a non-contact type radar transmitter ‘IN-TROL’ for large tanks. Being a non-contact type it was easy to handle and also there are no chances of corrosion damage of the instrument, hence it will serve for a long period of time.

Both types of transmitters have been successfully installed & commissioned. All these devices provided, are closely monitored by the employees of Transworld Furtichem Pvt. Ltd.

Successful Installation of Foam Detector at Tata Chemicals

Tata Chemicals is a well-known company in the field of industrial chemicals and branded agriculture & consumer products and they have also pioneered nutraceuticals for healthy and tasty modern food.

They faced a severe problem of extreme foam formation in their fermenter, containing a mixture of sugar solution, biomass & culture. The excess foaming resulted into heavy cost and reduced efficiency of the process, since large volume of foam occupies major portion of fermenter and chances of entering the foam in pipe lines and damage pump, which in turn caused increased down time. In spite of adding up the anti- foaming agent manually to restrict the foam formation, it led to intense consumption of expensive anti- foaming agent with low process yield.

They wanted to improve the process effectiveness to achieve cost savings in the use of anti- foaming agent. Pune Techtrol supplied Tata Chemicals with the solution, which was provided through the use of ‘Sure Sense.’ ‘Foam Detector’, consists of special probe with patented IMA Technology along with a control unit to automate the process of antifoam addition.

The probe was installed on the fermenter with adjustable process fittings which would sense the foam immediately on being formed. It makes the first move and gives signal to the control unit, which in turn would start/stop a dosing pump to control the flow of anti- foaming agent to the fermenter.

The concept of ‘Sure Sense’ has been working successfully which has resulted in incredible saving of anti- foaming agent and process downtime with reduced product wastage and increased batch size resulting in good quality return of the final product. This design of foam control is a recent phenomenon that Indian industries have witnessed and is speeding to catch up with it.

The application of ‘Sure Sense’ is used for foam control in water treatment plants, cooling towers, and process plants. An ultra-sensitive modification allows the foam detector to recognize very fine light foam to thick lathered foam.

How to Prevent Overfilling By Level Measurement And Control?

Overfill of any container is a potential hazard! Petroleum tanks, solvent farm tanks, LPG tanks, underground tanks, or even flowing solid filled silos do have a possibility of overfilling an outflow of stored material. Hence, they need to be monitored & controlled to prevent overfill and the subsequent loss. Besides, if the medium in question is flammable, it can cause severe damages to physical assets, environment and human beings. Prevention of such an occurrence can be achieved through overfill control along with savings in cleanup cost and downtime.

The quiddity of safe-handling fluid contents–both hazardous and inflammable–lies in the use of the right kind of level gauge. That would prevent from the tank to overfill, which in turn can keep everyone around safe and sound! Technology has evolved with time. Safety measures getting increasingly important and stringent, the industries have to keep themselves abreast of state-of-the-art gauging systems.

Overfill prevention can be accomplished by employing Techtrol level measuring instruments to control inlet flow into the tanks when the material level has reached high level. Level switches are installed on tank at high-level preset point, to detect presence of material and actuates auxiliary device to stop inlet flow.

Level transmitters are installed on tank to provide continuous level indication of material in the tank from bottom to top through a generated signal of 4-20mA at preset level. At preset level, a signal is transmitted to actuate auxiliary device and stop inlet flow.

Float Guided Switch is a top mounted switch based on Archimedes principle of floating body.  The float actuates a switch magnetically at a preset level point of liquids. It is available for single or multiple switching up to four levels.

Techtrol Bilge Switch is a miniature float switch mounted inside a perforated cage to prevent suspended particles from hindering the float movement in liquids. It is provided with an extension cable of required length to detect corresponding preset level in bilge tanks on ships. It is IRS class approved for marine applications and suitable for single switching.

Float Pivoted Switch is a side mounted switch for single switching, based on Archimedes principle of floating body in liquids. The float magnetically actuates a switch at preset level.

Displacer Switch is top mounted switch based on Archimedes principle of submerged body in liquids.  The switch is magnetically actuated due to upward buoyant force exerted by the displacer at preset level. It is top mounted and available for single or multiple switching.

Capacitance Switch is based on the principle of capacitance formed by the liquid between two electrodes at preset level. It is top mounted and available with site adjustable single or multiple switching.

Vibrating Fork Switch is made to vibrate through by powering piezo electric crystal. The vibrations are dampened when it comes in contact with material at preset level which in turn effect a change over in contacts for control action.  These are point level switches for liquid as well as free flowing solid. They can be top or side mounted angularly.

Rotary Paddle Switch is based on a low speed synchronous motor rotating a paddle. The rotary motion is stopped on coming in contact with free flowing solids, which in turn effect a change over in contacts for control action. These are point level switches for free flowing solid and can be top or side mounted angularly.

Float Guided Transmitter is based on change in resistance output caused by magnetic actuation of  reed contacts by the float movement in liquid to provide 4-20mA output for monitoring and control action.

Hydrostatic Transmitter is based on hydrostatic pressure of liquid level to provide 4-20mA output. It is available in two versions. One is top mounted and submerged into liquid and other is side mounted externally to the tank wall.

Ultrasonic Transmitter is top mounted, does not come in contact with service medium and provides continuous output for control action.  It works on ‘Time of Flight ‘principle using the speed of sound.

Guided Wave Radar is top mounted and provides continuous output for control action. It works on ‘Time of Flight’ principle using electromagnetic pulses transmitted along the guide rod.

Radar Transmitter is top mounted, does not come in contact with service medium and provides continuous output for control action.  It works on periodic linear frequency variation of transmitted electromagnetic signal which is reflected on measuring surface received with time delay. Difference in transmitted frequency &received frequency is proportional to liquid level.

Waste water management the required way out!
